Randal sagged in his chair in relief. “Thanks.”

Liza rubbed the grit from her eyes and struggled to focus on George Ramiro’s notebook. For the past two hours, she and Brad had pored over every piece of evidence, every e-mail message, every file and reference they’d collected as they’d tried to extract the truth from the illusions. After Brad had arranged for Randal to ride with the funeral director to retrieve Nero’s body, he’d suggested they move Liza to her hotel. For reasons ranging from security to appearances, he’d decided she shouldn’t stay in the same hotel where he’d recently relocated. Part of his survival strategy since the bomb that had destroyed his apartment several weeks ago had been to relocate on a weekly basis. The Homestead Hotel had been one of several places where Brad had been living out of his suitcase.

The implications had made Liza shudder. She couldn’t live like that. She needed roots, connections, a place to shelve books and hang laundry. It was beginning to seem as though they’d never be free of the mess they’d uncovered when they’d started asking questions about George Ramiro.

Brad studied the pictures Randal had taken from the White House evidence box. “I’ve been telling myself that for a week.”

She glanced at the clock. “Do you think we’ll hear from Randal soon?”

“I hope so. The guy at the funeral home told me he planned to get the body at eight. By the time they finish clearing the paperwork—” he shrugged—“they should be back in the District at anytime, I think.”

Liza dropped her pencil on the desk and sank back in her chair. “He was really shaken up.” The lights from the city cast long, eerie shadows into her sterile hotel room. “It still seems almost unreal to me.”

“I feel responsible,” Brad admitted. “Randal wasn’t fit to drive today, and I didn’t want to mess with having to park the car when I was down at the FEC.” He wiped his hands over his face with a weary sigh.

“I thought it was sweet that he wanted to do this.”

“Randal and Nero may have known each other only a couple of weeks, but they’d become fairly good friends.”

“They seem like an unlikely pair.”

That won a small smile. “I can see why you’d think that, but that’s one of the things God has been teaching me.

There’s a verse in the book of Matthew where Jesus is explaining salvation to the disciples.
