Randal sagged in his chair in relief. âThanks.â

Liza rubbed the grit from her eyes and struggled to focus on George Ramiroâs notebook. For the past two hours, she and Brad had pored over every piece of evidence, every e-mail message, every file and reference theyâd collected as theyâd tried to extract the truth from the illusions. After Brad had arranged for Randal to ride with the funeral director to retrieve Neroâs body, heâd suggested they move Liza to her hotel. For reasons ranging from security to appearances, heâd decided she shouldnât stay in the same hotel where heâd recently relocated. Part of his survival strategy since the bomb that had destroyed his apartment several weeks ago had been to relocate on a weekly basis. The Homestead Hotel had been one of several places where Brad had been living out of his suitcase.
The implications had made Liza shudder. She couldnât live like that. She needed roots, connections, a place to shelve books and hang laundry. It was beginning to seem as though theyâd never be free of the mess theyâd uncovered when theyâd started asking questions about George Ramiro.
Brad was right, she knew. Until they were able to break

the story and bring everything out in the open, they were both at serious risk. She had to face the fact that the shooter at the base this morning had been gunning for her. Though the military police had not yet released any information from their investigation, the coincidence was unsettling.
She was now as firmly caught in this snare as Brad.
But, maddeningly, the more she studied the evidence, the more obvious it became that they did not yet have all the pieces. âI know weâre missing something.â
Brad studied the pictures Randal had taken from the White House evidence box. âIâve been telling myself that for a week.â
She glanced at the clock. âDo you think weâll hear from Randal soon?â
âI hope so. The guy at the funeral home told me he planned to get the body at eight. By the time they finish clearing the paperworkââ he shruggedââthey should be back in the District at anytime, I think.â
Liza dropped her pencil on the desk and sank back in her chair. âHe was really shaken up.â The lights from the city cast long, eerie shadows into her sterile hotel room. âIt still seems almost unreal to me.â
âI feel responsible,â Brad admitted. âRandal wasnât fit to drive today, and I didnât want to mess with having to park the car when I was down at the FEC.â He wiped his hands over his face with a weary sigh.
âI thought it was sweet that he wanted to do this.â
âRandal and Nero may have known each other only a couple of weeks, but theyâd become fairly good friends.â
âThey seem like an unlikely pair.â
That won a small smile. âI can see why youâd think that, but thatâs one of the things God has been teaching me.
Thereâs a verse in the book of Matthew where Jesus is explaining salvation to the disciples.
